This colour talk highlights the need for sustainable practices in colour design, given its significant impact on environmental issues, as well as its influence on consumer behaviour and social sustainability. It calls for a shift in how designers approach colour, promoting a sustainable mindset throughout the design process.
This includes educating both designers and consumers and considering the environmental effects of constantly changing colour trends. Emphasising the use of local colours can help strengthen connections with landscapes and territories, while exploring new, eco-friendly materials, such as bio and nanoscale colours, offers alternatives to traditional dyes.
The presentation also advocates for accepting the natural lifecycle of colours, including fading, as a normal part of product use. Using recycled colours creatively can spark discussions about sustainability and highlight the environmental credentials of products.
Additionally, upcycling industrial waste for its valuable pigments can foster innovation through collaboration between science and art. Finally, improving colour management processes can help reduce waste and increase efficiency in colour production.
Through examples and case studies, this study offers practical guidelines for implementing these sustainable strategies in design practice and education.
